Worst thing you can do is file the soldering iron tip! You might need to buy another tip. So the symbol is that of a variable resistor. It is showing that the carbon track is connected across one and three, and that the slide is connected to two. It has a diagram of the top connection posts of the slide, so you can connect to it correctly :) Best thing you can do is connect a multimeter ...
