Hi Zeb,

Using Picaxe with a QR Scanner could be quite hard if I was you I would be thinking of using Arduino but even then it would be quite complex and well over 50 dollars in parts. What are you trying to do with the scanner.

Here are a few links that might be helpful for your project:

I would think a raspberry pi would be most suited for this job.

* Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ $45 ( https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SEVRBP0125) - Even though it's not the latest model, I have used it before for QR code reading (my VPLS project) and it worked fine with the python library Zbar (https://pypi.org/project/zbar/) which I used to read multiple QR codes from a USB webcam.

* Raspberry Pi Zero W About $20 from Adafruit (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3400) - I have NOT used this before, but it's a lot more cost effective than the other option. The more modular size means that the USB connectors on it are Micro USB, meaning if you are going to use a webcam with it, you will need an adapter. On a positive note, the RPI zero w, has the same specifications as the RPI Model B +, in terms of proccessor clock speed and ram. In fact it's even BETTER as it even comes with BUILT-IN wifi capabilities (no annoying dongles)

Out of these two I would say that the RPI zero W as it gives the same processing power as the Model B +, for a much cheaper cost.
