What Would be the Best Accelerometer for Detecting an Impact / Crash

Hi everyone!

Just wondering what you think would be the best accelerometer for detecting an impact/crash?
(I will be using it with an Arduino Nano.)

I would think most accelerators should work - however, I would personally check the Measurement Range, which is measured in g's unit (g-force).

For example: https://www.jaycar.co.nz/3-axis-accele ... /p/XC4478 has a measurement range of +/- 3g, which may be too little - depending on the type of impact or crash,
as an usual car crash (front-end, 50 km/h) pulls about 30g's.

If you are looking at detecting car crashes, I would look into the accelerometer used in cars to trigger the airbags.

Such example of airbag system MEMS sensor (as they call them):

From the above link you can see these chips have a minimum range of +/-120g however there is the exception of the SMB200 at +/-4.8g, but looking at the datasheet, it says that it was designed for roll-over detection.

P.S.: You might want to consider telling us what material are you talking about here. Different material will cause different deceleration pattern, resulting different IMU to be considered appropriate for the application. The accelerometer on top accept a wide range of acceleration, making it good for ... black box to record when exactly did a jet fighter crash.(ROFL)

But you might not need something like this if you are trying to detect a RC car running into plywood.

The accelerometer would be measuring the amount of impact that your head has in a low speed crashes (under 60km). It would be used in a similar way to this!
